Community Leaders Back EU-UNICEF Enrolment Drive In Jigawa

Community education leaders in Jigawa State have commended the European Union (EU) and UNICEF for their role in promoting school enrolment through a new awareness campaign.

The initiative, rolled out in collaboration with the Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), is targeting seven local government areas with activities such as town hall meetings designed to mobilise parents, teachers and local leaders.

At a launch event in Dutse on Monday, Ja’afar Danbaba, Chairman of the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) in Jahun, described the programme as timely, saying it would help stakeholders better understand their roles in supporting children’s education.

Ahmad Ciroma, who chairs the SBMC in Birnin Kudu, called for long-term continuity of the project. “Education challenges often require behavioural change. Sustained campaigns will keep communities engaged and help improve both enrolment and retention,” he said.

Local leaders also highlighted the campaign’s focus on women. “In the past, mothers were excluded from education discussions in our communities, but their involvement is now producing positive results,” said Aminu Hassan, SBMC Chairman in Hadejia.

Ali Babale, Chairman of the SBMC in Kafinhausa, echoed the call for the campaign to be extended statewide. He said the initiative had already proven effective as a strategy to improve enrolment and should not be limited to a handful of pilot areas.
