An Air India flight en route to London Gatwick has crashed shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad, with an unconfirmed number of casualties among passengers and crew.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, designated as Flight AI171, departed from Ahmedabad Airport at approximately 1:00 PM local time.
According to Indian aviation officials, the aircraft went down just minutes later in the Meghani Nagar residential district, located near the airport’s boundary.
Local police reported that at least 242 people were aboard, and emergency response operations are currently in progress.
Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, the Director General of the Directorate of Civil Aviation, confirmed the incident to the Associated Press (AP), describing it as a “severe incident.”
Flight tracking website Flightradar24 indicated that the plane had reached an altitude of 625 feet before losing its signal shortly after take-off.
Eyewitness accounts captured video showing thick flames and black smoke rising above the city as emergency services hurried to the scene.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) indicated that the aircraft crashed just outside the airport limits.
Air India acknowledged the incident through a statement on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, 12 June 2025. We are currently confirming details and will provide updates via our official channels.”
The flight was expected to arrive at London Gatwick at 6:25 PM UK time, according to the airport’s confirmation.
India’s Civil Aviation Minister, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, expressed his heartfelt condolences regarding the tragedy.
“I am shocked and devastated by the news of the Air India crash. I am personally monitoring the situation and have directed all aviation and emergency response agencies to act swiftly and in coordination. Rescue teams are being mobilised, and efforts are being made to ensure that medical aid and relief reach the site as quickly as possible.
“My thoughts and prayers are with those on board and their families,” Kinjarapu stated.
