The political climate in Nasarawa State is heating up ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with former Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, emerging as a frontrunner following a widespread endorsement from Lafia political stakeholders.
At a gathering on Monday, civic leaders and politicians urged the retired police chief to throw his hat into the ring, citing his integrity, global experience, and reputation for effective leadership.
Professor Mohammed Mainoma, who chaired the event, praised Adamu as a “rare breed of public servant” capable of delivering meaningful progress to Nasarawa. “He has the credentials and discipline to transform this state. We need someone with his calibre to lead us forward,” Mainoma said.
Highlighting Adamu’s past roles at Interpol and as Nigeria’s top police officer, speakers argued that his track record in law enforcement and public service positioned him as an ideal candidate to bring stability and prosperity to the state.
“No one else brings to the table what Adamu does—courage, competence, and a clear national and international outlook,” said Barrister Musa Hussaini. “Lafia has spoken with one voice today. This is a unity we haven’t seen in decades.”
He encouraged community members to prepare for the 2027 election by registering with the ruling APC party, positioning themselves to back Adamu should he decide to run.
While over 30 individuals have reportedly declared interest in the governorship, supporters maintain that Adamu’s credentials make him the leading candidate.
Federal legislator Abubakar Sarki-Dahiru, who represents Lafia/Obi Constituency, added his voice to the growing chorus. “Adamu is not just experienced; he’s also compassionate and inclusive. He would be a governor for all.”
Responding to the appeals, Adamu said he had no prior political ambitions but acknowledged the groundswell of public support. “This is not a decision I take lightly. I will consult widely with stakeholders across the state,” he said.
Adamu’s potential candidacy adds a compelling new dynamic to Nasarawa’s political landscape, and many will be watching closely as consultations unfold in the months ahead.
