Residents of Bwari and adjoining communities in the FCT will soon enjoy improved access to potable water, following the inauguration of a major water supply expansion project by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Launched on Wednesday, the project will cover 198 kilometres of pipelines and serve Bwari, Ushafa, Kuduru, Jigo, Kuchuku, and other settlements long dependent on boreholes and untreated water.
Wike, who pledged that the initiative would not suffer abandonment, said President Bola Tinubu had approved 50 per cent of the contract sum upfront to enable contractors deliver ahead of the original 18-month schedule.
“This project will not just supply clean water but also create over 1,600 jobs for our people,” he said.
The Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, hailed the project as key to improving health and living standards, while FCDA Acting Executive Secretary Richard Dauda said the scheme was in line with the Abuja Master Plan to develop satellite towns alongside the city centre.
The project, beginning with Bwari and Karu, is expected to be extended to Kuje, Kwali, Gwagwalada, and Abaji before the end of Tinubu’s tenure.
