Muhammadu Buhari, Nigeria’s former President, is undergoing medical treatment in the United Kingdom after falling ill during a planned annual check-up, according to his spokesperson.
Garba Shehu, a long-serving media aide to Buhari, confirmed the development in comments to local media. “It is true that the former President, Muhammadu Buhari, is unwell. He has been receiving treatment in the UK,” Shehu said. “He went for his annual medical check-up, became ill there, but is doing well in his recovery. We pray for his healthy recovery.”
While the precise nature of Buhari’s illness has not been made public, the admission ends growing speculation following his prolonged absence from Nigeria.
Buhari, who left office in May 2023 after two terms, was known for making multiple medical trips to London during his presidency, often staying abroad for extended periods.
Shehu did not say when Buhari is expected to return home, leaving questions over the former leader’s future schedule.
