BREAKING: Professor Chris Piwuna Elected as New ASUU President

Abuja, Nigeria – Professor Chris Piwuna has been elected as the new President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

Piwuna, who serves as a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital (JUTH) and is currently the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos in Plateau State, takes over from Professor Victor Osodeke, a prominent soil science expert from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State.

Sources close to the election reveal that Piwuna ran against Professor Adamu Babayo from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi.

The election was held during the 23rd National Delegates Congress of the Union, which took place on Sunday in Benin City, Edo State.

Piwuna’s tenure begins at a pivotal moment, amid rising concerns regarding potential industrial actions. These concerns are largely attributed to unresolved issues, such as the allocation of the recently released Earned Academic Allowances by the Federal Government, ongoing brain drain, and other persistent challenges within Nigeria’s university system.
