Benue State Unveils Affordable Housing Scheme To Ease Rental Pressures

Benue State authorities have launched a housing development in Makurdi designed to bring down rental costs and provide more affordable homes for residents.

Governor Hyacinth Alia, represented by Deputy Governor Dr Sam Ode, on Wednesday flagged off the construction of Eco City, a 32-unit housing estate. The initiative is a key element of the state government’s strategy to address Benue’s housing shortage and foster economic growth.

Alia noted that housing was a central pillar of his administration’s reforms, stressing the importance of creating a supportive environment for private developers to thrive. “We are determined to reduce the housing gap and support businesses in the sector to grow,” he said.

The governor also urged the Benue Investment and Property Company Limited (BIPC) — the agency responsible for the project — to continue attracting investors to enhance the state’s infrastructure.

Dr Raymond Asemakaha, Group Managing Director of BIPC, explained that Eco City is only the beginning of a larger housing programme. A second and third phase are planned, including a 100-unit estate on a 30-hectare plot along Gboko Road.

He confirmed that the first phase would be completed within a year, with unit pricing to be disclosed upon completion. “Our vision is to deliver affordable, quality homes to the people of Benue. We will ensure the scheme is flexible enough for civil servants and ordinary citizens to benefit,” Asemakaha said.
