The Benue State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has thrown its weight behind the state government’s N100 billion infrastructure development loan, describing it as a transformative initiative with the potential to boost key sectors of the state’s economy.
In a communiqué issued at the end of its congress in Makurdi, signed by Mr Japheth Kwaghhom and Mr Charles Paku, the union praised Governor Hyacinth Alia’s administration for its development drive but stressed the need for transparency and strict monitoring of the loan’s disbursement.
The NUJ commended the government’s decision to ban customised textbooks in public schools, saying it would help standardise the education system, while also acknowledging the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) for its recruitment efforts.
However, the union urged SUBEB to address concerns over partial salary payments to new teachers and called on the Teaching Service Board to accelerate recruitment to fill gaps in secondary schools.
Raising alarm over the rising incidence of crime in Makurdi and other localities, the NUJ appealed to security agencies to intensify surveillance and ensure public safety.
The communiqué also lauded the ongoing construction of the Media Village at Achusa as a “landmark project” that symbolises government’s commitment to the welfare of journalists.
It further called for urgent rehabilitation of the General Hospital, North Bank, and improvements in other health facilities across the state.
The union passed a vote of confidence on its chairman, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, and the State Working Committee, praising their inclusive leadership and efforts to restore professionalism through journalist verification.
It also commended the Commissioner for Information, Dr Peter Egbodo, for his engagement with the media community and his support for press freedom in Benue State.
