Benin Coup Foiled As ECOWAS Offers Regional Backing

Benin Republic’s armed forces have thwarted a coup attempt led by Lt.-Col. Pascal Tigri, who had briefly declared himself leader on national television, local media reported on Sunday.

ECOWAS reacted by pledging support for Benin, including the potential deployment of its regional standby force to safeguard the country’s constitutional order. The commission also condemned the coup attempt as unconstitutional and a threat to regional stability.

The incident follows similar unrest in the ECOWAS sub-region, including coups in Guinea-Bissau and the Sahel states of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger, which have all since exited the bloc.
