Barcelona Snap Up Espanyol Goalkeeper Joan García In Long-Term Deal

Reigning La Liga champions FC Barcelona have bolstered their goalkeeping ranks with the acquisition of Joan García from city rivals Espanyol, securing the 24-year-old shot-stopper for €25 million under the terms of his release clause.

García has committed his future to Barça until 2031, in a transfer that has stirred the rivalry between the two Catalan clubs. Espanyol had hoped to retain the player but were left with no alternative once the release clause was triggered.

The transfer comes amid significant interest from abroad, with a host of Premier League clubs — including Arsenal, Manchester City, Newcastle, Aston Villa, and Bournemouth — previously linked to the player. However, comments from City boss Pep Guardiola, indicating no urgent need to reinforce his goalkeeper department, opened the door for Barcelona to seal the deal.

García joins an already crowded goalkeeping department at the Spotify Camp Nou, featuring long-time No. 1 Marc-André ter Stegen, experienced Polish international Wojciech Szczęsny, and academy graduate Iñaki Peña.

Ter Stegen, who recently returned from a lengthy injury spell, is expected to remain the club’s primary choice between the posts. The German has affirmed his intention to stay with Barça, despite mounting competition.

Szczęsny, who came out of retirement to sign on a short-term basis in October following Ter Stegen’s knee injury, is yet to decide whether to extend his contract, which expires this month.

Peña, now 26, is tipped for a summer exit as he seeks regular top-flight football elsewhere, following limited opportunities with the senior squad.

García’s arrival represents a significant investment in the club’s future, with the goalkeeper regarded as one of Spain’s most promising talents in the position.
