The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has announced the successful completion of the Awodi-07 appraisal and exploration well by Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), describing the results as a significant boost to confidence in the Joint Venture’s asset portfolio.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the Awodi-07 well is situated in the shallow offshore western Niger Delta and forms part of ongoing exploration efforts by the NNPC Ltd/CNL Joint Venture to unlock additional hydrocarbon potential.
Drilling commenced in November 2025 and was completed by mid-December, with all operations executed safely and in strict adherence to regulatory and operational requirements. Comprehensive testing and data acquisition were conducted before the well was safely secured.
Analysis of the results indicates the presence of hydrocarbons across multiple reservoir zones, an outcome described as highly promising for future development.
The discovery underscores the effectiveness of disciplined exploration strategies, robust technical evaluation and close operational cooperation between NNPC Ltd and Chevron Nigeria Limited.
Under their joint venture agreement, Chevron holds a 40 per cent interest in the assets, while NNPC Ltd retains the remaining stake. The collaboration is designed to increase oil production to around 146,000 barrels per day, supporting government revenue, job creation and national energy supply.
Commenting on the achievement, NNPC Ltd Group Chief Executive Officer, Mr Bashir Ojulari, commended Chevron Nigeria Limited for its consistent delivery of value and operational performance. He noted that the Awodi-07 success aligns with NNPC Ltd’s strategic priorities of boosting production, enhancing energy security and delivering sustainable benefits for Nigerians.
NNPC Ltd’s Executive Vice President for Upstream, Mr Udy Ntia, also welcomed the development, stating that the results highlight the importance of strong partnerships, technical discipline and an enabling operating environment. He added that recent sector reforms under the Petroleum Industry Act had played a key role in supporting such exploration successes.
