Atiku Abubakar Quits PDP Citing ‘Irreconcilable Differences’

Former Nigerian Vice President Atiku Abubakar has announced his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), bringing an end to his decades-long association with the party he once represented twice as a presidential candidate.

In a letter dated 14 July 2025, addressed to the PDP ward chairman in his native Jada, Adamawa State, Atiku described the move as “heartbreaking” but necessary. He said the party’s current path no longer aligns with the founding vision that initially drew him in.

“I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for,” he wrote.

Atiku expressed deep gratitude for the trust the party placed in him throughout his political career, highlighting his service as Vice President for two full terms. He ended the letter by extending best wishes to the party’s leadership and members.

The letter was formally acknowledged by local PDP officials on 14 July 2025. Atiku, who holds the traditional title of Waziri Adamawa, has yet to announce his future political plans, leaving speculation about his next steps ahead of Nigeria’s political realignments.
