ASUU UI Stages Peaceful Protest, Urges FG To Honour Its Agreement

Academic staff at the University of Ibadan (UI) staged a campus-wide protest on Tuesday, calling on the Federal Government to honour agreements with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).

The demonstration, led by ASUU UI chairperson Dr Aderemi Afolabi, comes days before a government meeting scheduled for 28 August. Protesters carried banners denouncing what they described as years of unfulfilled promises and delay tactics.

Afolabi demanded the immediate implementation of the Alhaji Yayale Ahmed Report, which he said encapsulated all contentious issues and reflected a consensus between the union and the government. The report was submitted in February 2025 but has yet to be acted upon.

“Our protest is to tell the government we are tired of being pushed over,” Afolabi said. “Our members are increasingly frustrated, and they will not accept endless delays without tangible outcomes.”

On Monday, ASUU’s Ibadan Zone warned that lecturers may embark on strike action if the government fails to meet their demands.
