Anambra State Marks Teachers’ Day With School Holiday

Anambra State in south-east Nigeria will suspend classes on Tuesday, 7 October, as part of activities to honour teachers, Governor Chukwuma Soludo has announced.

The state’s Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, said in Awka on Monday that the school-free day was approved because the 2025 World Teachers’ Day, which is globally observed on 5 October, fell on a Sunday.

“To ensure teachers in Anambra are properly celebrated, His Excellency has approved Tuesday as a school-free day,” she explained.

Beyond the holiday, civil society and education groups are expected to stage an appreciation march for the governor’s reforms in the sector. The Solution Parents League and the Association of Private School Owners are due to converge on Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, for what organisers describe as a “mega endorsement march”.

Teachers, parents, and school proprietors have been invited to join the rally, scheduled to begin at 8:00 a.m.

The move underlines the Soludo administration’s efforts to position education at the heart of its governance agenda, while also aligning with the global recognition of teachers’ role in shaping future generations.
