Nigeria’s sprint queen, Tobi Amusan, on Monday claimed silver in the women’s 100 meters hurdles at the World Championships in Tokyo, clocking an impressive 12.29 seconds.
It marks her first medal since the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest, ending a difficult three-year spell. The silver also represents Nigeria’s first podium finish at the ongoing championships, which run from Sept. 13 to 21.
Switzerland’s Itaji Kambundji stormed to gold in a national record of 12.24s, edging out Amusan, while the USA’s Grace Stark took bronze in 12.34s.
Other finalists included Masai Russell (USA, 12.44), Pia Skrzyszowska (Poland, 12.49 SB), Devynne Charlton (Bahamas, 12.49 SB), Danielle Williams (Jamaica, 12.53), and Nadine Visser (Netherlands, 12.56).
For Amusan, the medal is both a moment of pride and reflection, as she reaffirms her place among the world’s elite hurdlers and continues to inspire a new generation of Nigerian athletes.
