Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) has celebrated retired General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida on his 84th birthday, describing him as an enduring symbol of leadership and national unity.
In a message of felicitation issued on Wednesday, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adamu Ahmed praised the former Nigerian military president for what he called “a lifetime defined by service, character and belief in the country’s collective future.”
Babangida, who led Nigeria between 1985 and 1993, was conferred with an Honorary Doctorate of Laws by ABU in November 2012. The university said it was proud to count him among its honorary alumni.
“Your wisdom, experience, and vision remain vital resources in the ongoing search for peace, stability, and national renewal,” Ahmed said. He added that Babangida’s advanced years should serve as an example that age does not diminish the ability to contribute meaningfully to society.
The vice-chancellor prayed for the former leader’s continued health and guidance as Nigeria navigates its challenges.
