Dr Michael David, Executive Director, Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP) says Africa needs about 53 billion dollars grant to enhance food sovereignty.
David said this in Abuja on Wednesday, at the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Media Workshop on Climate Adaptation.
According to him, we need the right finance to impact on food security. Since 2021, just 11 billion dollars has come into Africa and we have 54 countries in Africa.
“We no longer need loans for climate adaptation we need grants. There should be zero loans on climate adaptation.
“Climate change is impacting on food, and flood is also causing loss of lives. For us to live we need to adapt to climate change; a great need to shift from mitigation to adaptation.
The executive director added that climate change and climate adaptation were science and that most media practitioners come from the background of arts.
“To enable journalists to communicate better on climate adaptation they must understand the science in climate adaptation.
“Everyone needs to adapt to climate change because it is impacting on our lives and livelihoods as well as food production.
”Because we need food to live, the more reason for climate adaptation,” he said.
