The African Democratic Congress (ADC) made a bold entrance into Rivers State on Wednesday, fuelling speculation of a major political realignment ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Supporters gathered at the Port Harcourt International Airport to receive former governor Rotimi Amaechi and other party officials attending the formal launch of the party in the oil-rich state. Some in the crowd voiced hopes that a strategic alliance between Amaechi and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar could be the party’s presidential ticket for 2027.
“We believe in the strength of that ticket,” said Mr Tele Bathram, a former ADC governorship aspirant, speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria. “The party is working to secure a stronghold at the grassroots level and take over all 23 local councils.”
He described ADC as a coalition of reform-minded politicians and disaffected members of Nigeria’s dominant parties. The group, he said, is focused on reshaping the national political discourse.
Another supporter, Christian Akujiobi, criticised the current administration for what he described as increasing deprivation in Rivers State. “The people have suffered enough,” he said. “ADC offers a chance for restoration and progress.”
But not everyone is convinced of the party’s traction. “Amaechi has lost significant support in Rivers,” said Port Harcourt resident Williams Ndamiete. “He’s no longer seen as a credible political force here. His supporters have long since moved on.”
While speculation surrounding an Atiku-Amaechi ticket remains unofficial, ADC’s recent moves suggest growing ambitions. The party has attracted prominent national figures including Atiku, Amaechi, former PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus, former Senate President David Mark—who now serves as ADC National Chairman—and former Osun Governor Rauf Aregbesola, the current National Secretary.
Observers say the growing coalition reflects a broader dissatisfaction within Nigeria’s political elite and could pose a significant challenge to the traditional party structure heading into 2027.
