ADC Chairman David Mark Celebrates Gen Yakubu Gowon At 91

The National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Sen. David Mark, has paid tribute to former Head of State, retired Gen. Yakubu Gowon, in honour of his 91st birthday, praising his lifelong dedication to peace, unity and national service.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Paul Mumeh, Mark lauded Gowon’s contributions to Nigeria’s nationhood, describing him as a symbol of humility, patriotism and selfless leadership.

“Gen. Gowon’s life and legacy remain a shining testament to humility in leadership, devotion to national unity, and unwavering faith in the destiny of Nigeria,” Mark said.

He praised Gowon for his sacrifices in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and promoting reconciliation following the civil war.

Mark recalled that during his tenure as Head of State from 1966 to 1975, Gowon led the nation through one of its most difficult periods and upheld the enduring principle of ‘No Victor, No Vanquished’, which fostered healing, forgiveness and national cohesion after the civil war.

He added that even in retirement, Gowon has remained steadfast in promoting peace, prayer and patriotism through initiatives such as ‘Nigeria Prays’, proving that service to the nation goes beyond holding public office.

“His humility, integrity and faith-driven leadership continue to serve as a moral compass for younger generations,” Mark noted.

On the occasion of his 91st birthday, Mark thanked God for blessing Gowon with long life, sound health and an unrelenting spirit of service.

He described the former Head of State as “a father of the nation, a bridge-builder and a true patriot,” and prayed for many more years of peace, grace and good health for him.
