A former aide to the late Lagos State governor, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, Comrade Salihu Dantata Mahmud, has appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to forgive and pardon officers allegedly involved in a recent coup attempt.
In an open letter addressed to the President, Mahmud described Tinubu as “the Jagaban and omo Iya oloja,” urging him to demonstrate the spirit of democracy and compassion he once championed during his activism years.
He reminded the President of how he, alongside others, had previously pleaded for clemency for figures such as Olusegun Obasanjo, Lawan Gwadabe, Fadile and the late Shehu Yar’Adua in 1995.
Mahmud said at this crucial time in the nation’s history, Nigeria needed peace and reconciliation, not bloodshed.
“As a democrat, write your name in gold by forgiving them. In doing that, investigate why and what led to that,” he said.
He stressed that for Nigeria to progress, its leaders must embrace forgiveness and unity.
