Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has outlined a comprehensive plan to transform Abuja into a smart and sustainable city through targeted investments in mobility, sustainability, public safety, digital governance, and economic empowerment.
Speaking at the 2025 Asia Pacific Cities Summit and Mayors’ Forum in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Wike said the capital’s development blueprint is anchored on innovation and partnerships. His remarks were contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by his media aide, Lere Olayinka.
Wike said Abuja was working closely with global development partners, citing collaborations with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on smart water metering, Chinese support for intelligent traffic light systems, and projects such as the Abuja City Walk and Abuja Industrial Park.
“These efforts demonstrate our commitment to sustainable development through public-private partnerships and global cooperation,” he said.
Under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Wike explained, Abuja’s smart city model is focused on:
Expanding urban mobility through advanced traffic management and public transport systems.
Promoting sustainability via waste-to-wealth schemes and renewable energy integration.
Enhancing public safety through solar streetlights, CCTV coverage, and responsive emergency systems.
Strengthening digital governance with tools like a central call centre and online land registration.
Driving economic empowerment by attracting technology firms and creating employment opportunities for young people.
He highlighted the government’s plan to launch a National Employment Database in partnership with international agencies, aimed at connecting jobseekers to opportunities and guiding youth training and entrepreneurship initiatives.
“Abuja’s smart city journey isn’t just about technology—it’s about people. We’re building an inclusive and secure environment that empowers citizens and fuels innovation,” Wike said.
While in Dubai, Wike also met with Reem bint Al Hashimy, the UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation and Head of the Political Affairs Office for Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
