An Abuja magistrate has ordered the arrest of a security guard accused of stealing cash and personal belongings from his employer after he failed to appear for trial.
Chief Magistrate Hafsat Amiru issued the bench warrant on Monday at the Wuse Magistrates’ Court after prosecution lawyer Okokon Mbruk complained that the defendant, 47-year-old Teryima Joseph, had repeatedly failed to attend proceedings.
The court also instructed that a notice be served on the defendant’s surety, requiring them to explain why the bail bond should not be revoked. The case has been adjourned until 12 November.
Police allege that Joseph, who was employed as a private guard by ACP Alex Ebbah, tampered with the home’s security cameras before stealing $200, ₦2 million, laptops, designer clothing, and other valuables on 16 June.
He was charged with theft by servant under Section 287 of Nigeria’s Penal Code, a charge to which he entered a plea of not guilty.
