‘A Loss To Africa’s Greats’: Nigerian Governors Honour Buhari’s Memory

Nigeria’s state governors have paid heartfelt tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London on Sunday, describing his death as the loss of a true African statesman.

In a statement signed by AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) and governor of Kwara State, Buhari was praised not only for his political achievements but for the character that defined his public and private life.

“Former President Buhari was more than a national leader—he was a figure of immense moral courage and quiet strength, whose modest way of life and strategic patience earned widespread respect,” the statement read.

The governors offered condolences to President Bola Tinubu on losing a close ally and predecessor, and extended sympathies to former First Lady Aisha Buhari and the entire Buhari family. Special mention was also made of Katsina State governor Dikko Umar Radda and the people of Buhari’s home state.

In closing, the NGF prayed: “May Allah forgive his shortcomings, grant him a place in al-Jannah Firdaus, and give the family and the nation the fortitude to cope with this loss.”
