Minsk-Moscow Alliance Reinforces Belarus’ Sovereignty – Belarusian Presidential Candidate

Belarusian presidential candidate and the leader of the Liberal Democratic Party, Oleg Gaidukevich, said in his campaign speech that Belarus’ alliance with Russia to reinforce its sovereignty and statehood.

“Since the founding of the party, we have always supported integration processes in the post-Soviet space, supported the union with Russia, and now supporting the Eurasian Economic Union.

“The Collective Security Treaty Organisation, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and BRICS. The union of Belarus and Russia strengthens our statehood and sovereignty,’’ Gaidukevich said.

The presidential election would be held in Belarus on Jan. 26.

The incumbent Belarusian president, Alexander Lukashenko, would also be running for the country’s top job.

Lukashenko secured his sixth term in office in the August 2020 election, which triggered opposition-led mass protests.

The West imposed several rounds of sanctions on Belarus on accusations of election fraud and human rights violations, which Belarus denied.

He said the sanctions were later expanded due to Minsk’s support of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine. (RIA/NAN)
