The Israeli Air Force says it struck militants from the Palestinian groups, Islamic Jihad and Hamas, on Wednesday.
The militants were “conducting terrorist activities within the humanitarian zone in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip,” the Israeli military said.
The military had earlier said in a Telegram post before the “precise strike” that numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians.
The steps, according to the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF), include the use of precise munitions, aerial surveillance and additional intelligence.
“This is a further example of the Hamas terrorist organisation’s systematic abuse of civilian infrastructure and use of the humanitarian area as cover for their terrorist attacks and in violation of international law,” the IDF said.
It did not provide any information about possible victims. The information could not be independently verified.
The current conflict started when Hamas and other extremists from Gaza invaded Israel on October 7, 2023, killing 1,200, and taking some 250 hostages.
Israel then launched a massive retaliation, which the Hamas-run Health Ministry says has resulted in more than 40,000 people dead.
Israel has come under international criticism, given the high number of civilian casualties and dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. (dpa/NAN)
