A man armed with a knife was shot dead by police in the western German city of Moers on Tuesday, prompting a homicide investigation.
Police were called to the scene after the 26-year-old German man attacked and threatened several people in a residential area on Tuesday afternoon.
According to current information, the man is said to have attacked the police officers with two knives in his hands, police said in a statement.
Police officers then fired, fatally injuring the man.
No other people were injured in the incident.
A spokeswoman for the public prosecutor’s office in Moers said the man’s motive remains unclear.
Police in the neighbouring city of Duisburg are set to investigate the case.
A police spokesman said a forensics team was at the scene on Tuesday evening.
The incident in Moers came just days after three people were stabbed to death at a festival in the western city of Solingen.
The main suspect is a 26-year-old Syrian man who had apparently evaded a deportation order.
