Justice Nkeonye Maha of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, on Monday, sentenced Joshua Samuel, 35, to 13 months in Agodi Correctional Centre for trafficking 4.7kg of Cannabis Sativa.
Delivering judgment, Maha convicted and sentenced Samuel following his guilty plea and the evidence tendered against him by the prosecution.
The judge said that in sentencing the convict, she considered the defence counsel’s allocutus that the convict was a first offender and his pledge to turn a new leaf.
“I hope that the convict will no longer put his family to disgrace by going back to the crime.
“To serve as a deterrent, I sentence you Samuel to 13 months in the correctional centre, starting from the date of arrest.
“He shall spend nine months in the prison and four months shall be none custodian, that is receiving counselling in the office of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).
“The dry weed found in his possession is forfeited to the NDLEA and shall be destroyed,” Maha stated.
The prosecuting counsel, Mrs R.O. Ige had earlier informed the court that the convict committed the crime on Sept. 16, 2025, at Bodija area, Ibadan, Oyo State.
Ige explained that NDLEA operatives, based on credible intelligence from informants, intercepted Samuel on the fateful day and found in his possession a black sack containing 4.7kg of Cannabis Sativa.
The prosecutor said that the offence contravened the provision of Section 11(C ) of the NDLEA Act Cap. N30 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004.
