Tax Ombud: An Independent Mediator For Resolving Taxpayer Disputes – Nwabueze

The Chief Executive Officer, Office of the Tax Ombud, Dr John Nwabueze, says the office acts as an independent conciliator to help taxpayers and authorities resolve disputes amicably without litigation.

Nwabueze said this at a breakfast meeting with financial correspondents in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said that the office reviews complaints, engages relevant authorities and recommends fair resolutions on disputed tax assessments.

According to him, dissatisfied parties retain the right to seek redress at the Tax Appeal Tribunal or the courts.

The CEO said that the office had begun handling complaints, including cases from Niger state and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).

Nwabueze said that the public awareness remained low because the office was relatively new but promised regular updates on its activities.

He said that taxpayers nationwide could access the office through its website and call centre, including a callback service for those with limited airtime.

The CEO said that the office planned to establish a presence across the country to ensure easy access to its services.

Nwabueze said that the office would also address complaints involving revenue-generating agencies, including customs and port authorities.

He noted that resolving cases of unfair treatment would boost taxpayer confidence, encourage compliance and improve government revenue.

According to him, the office is committed to protecting both taxpayers and authorities by ensuring fairness and accountability in revenue administration.
