Delta South senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas has urged authorities to ensure justice and tighten protections for women after an attack linked to a festival in Ozoro, Delta State.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday, following a visit to the traditional ruler of Ozoro Kingdom, Anthony Ogbogbo Ibuka I, Thomas condemned the incident in strong terms.
The lawmaker, of the All Progressives Congress, described the attack as “criminal” and “barbaric”, adding that it represented a grave violation of human dignity.
He dismissed suggestions that such acts were culturally sanctioned, stating that no such practice exists in Ozoro or across Isoko land.
According to him, the events in Oramudu Community were the actions of “a few criminal elements” and not reflective of local traditions, which he said are grounded in respect and the protection of women.
Thomas praised the prompt intervention of community members, local vigilante groups and the Nigeria Police Force in restoring calm and assisting victims.
He called for a thorough and transparent police investigation, stressing that accountability is essential.
The senator further urged community leaders and custodians of culture to introduce stricter controls for festivals and public gatherings to prevent similar incidents.
