Appeal Court Ruling: Akpabio Congratulates Senate On Suspension Verdict

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has praised members of the Senate following a Court of Appeal judgment that upheld the six-month suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Speaking at the commencement of an emergency plenary session on Tuesday, Mr Akpabio said the ruling confirmed the Senate’s constitutional authority to discipline its members.

The Court of Appeal, sitting in Abuja, ruled that the Senate acted lawfully in suspending Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan in March 2025 over alleged misconduct.

In its unanimous judgment, the three-member panel held that the suspension did not breach the senator’s constitutional rights or parliamentary privileges.

Mr Akpabio told senators that adherence to the Constitution and the Senate’s Standing Orders was essential for maintaining order within the legislature.

He said the court had clearly affirmed the Senate’s power to discipline any erring official, warning that institutions without respect for rules and order risk descending into chaos.

The Senate President congratulated lawmakers on the verdict and applauded the judiciary for its resolve in upholding constitutional provisions and legislative authority.
