Sport Key To Character And National Development, Says Army Official

An army official has emphasised the importance of sport as a strategic tool for nurturing discipline, leadership and unity in schools.

Brigadier-General Ogheneyerowo Onovwiona, Director of the Leadership Development Institute at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, made the remarks at the 17th Inter-House Sports Competition of Command Day Secondary School, Lungi Barracks, Abuja.

According to him, sporting activities help instil core values including teamwork, perseverance, self-discipline and respect for rules, all of which are fundamental to character formation and long-term national development.

He explained that introducing students to sport at an early age builds physical endurance and mental focus, qualities that often support academic success and prepare young people for leadership roles in adulthood.

Brigadier-General Onovwiona applauded the school authorities for successfully organising the event, noting the high level of participation, coordination and enthusiasm displayed by the students.

He encouraged the pupils to apply the same commitment shown in sporting activities to their academic pursuits, adding that integrity and discipline were hallmarks of responsible leadership.

Speaking earlier, the school’s Commandant, Oghereovie Akisa, said the competition was organised to strengthen unity, promote physical fitness and reinforce values consistent with the ethos of the Nigerian Army and the school’s mission.

He stressed that success in sport should be measured not only by medals won but by fairness, integrity and respect for others.

The competition included track and field events, novelty races and vibrant house parades, attracting parents, invited guests and the wider school community.
