ISWAP has appointed Abu Khalifa as its new commander around the Timbuktu Triangle after its former leader, Julaibib, was killed by Nigerian troops during an operation in Damboa, Borno State.
Security sources said the appointment followed internal deliberations within the group after Julaibib was neutralised in the Kimba axis by soldiers under Operation HADIN KAI.
The sources, referenced by Lake Chad–based counter-insurgency analyst Zagazola Makama, noted that ISWAP moved swiftly to fill the leadership vacuum created by the loss of its commander.
Intelligence reports confirmed that Abu Khalifa has assumed control of ISWAP operations in the area, although the group is yet to formally name a deputy.
A fighter identified as Tuja is said to be under consideration for the role of second-in-command, though no final decision has been made.
The development coincides with intensified military pressure on insurgent groups, as Nigerian forces continue coordinated assaults on ISWAP and Boko Haram positions across southern Borno.
