Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has assured residents that the state will continue to enjoy good governance beyond the end of his tenure in May 2027.
Speaking on Sunday at a thanksgiving service marking Oyo State’s 50th anniversary at the Cathedral of St Peter’s, Ibadan, Makinde said his administration had built strong foundations for sustained development.
The governor said members of his team were ready to continue the state’s development efforts in different capacities, adding that Oyo was well positioned for its next phase of growth.
Makinde congratulated residents on the golden jubilee, describing the milestone as a product of God’s grace. He said his election as governor in 2019, after eight years of contesting, represented a turning point for the state.
Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, also spoke at the event, praising Makinde’s leadership and reform-driven governance.
Obi urged Nigerians to continue praying for political leaders, saying the country’s problems stemmed from poor governance rather than poverty.
In his sermon, the Archbishop of Ibadan Province, the Most Reverend Williams Aladekugbe, commended God’s faithfulness to Oyo State and praised past leaders for their roles in its development.
He also lauded Makinde’s people-oriented programmes, citing improvements in infrastructure, workers’ and pensioners’ welfare and peaceful coexistence, and offered prayers for continued good governance in the state and Nigeria.
