Asogwa Seeks Reconciliation As Nsukka Council Crisis Nears Resolution

The Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area, Enugu State, Chief Jude Asogwa, has called for the recall of 12 councillors suspended since August 2025 following an attempted impeachment of the council’s leadership.

The suspension affected more than half of the 20-member Nsukka Legislative Council after the councillors allegedly moved to impeach the Leader of the Council, Mr Emmanuel Ugwu.

Speaking on Monday at a stakeholders’ meeting held at Adada House in Nsukka, Chief Asogwa urged the legislative council to prioritise reconciliation and stability.

He said the affected councillors should formally apologise to the council leadership, stressing that mistakes could be forgiven if genuine remorse was shown.

The council chairman criticised the decision of the councillors to pursue impeachment without first consulting him or other stakeholders, describing the action as disrespectful and damaging to the image of the local government.

He praised political leaders and community stakeholders who intervened to prevent further escalation of the crisis.

The acting APC Chairman in Nsukka Local Government, Chief Chris Ezema, also appealed for the suspension to be lifted, describing the chairman’s intervention as timely and necessary for unity within the council.

In his response, Mr Ugwu said he appreciated the efforts of the council chairman and stakeholders, adding that the matter would be tabled for discussion at an upcoming legislative session.

On behalf of the suspended councillors, Mr Chidi Okoro thanked the stakeholders for their mediation and assured that the incident would not be repeated.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that prominent political figures, including Chief Fabian Onah, APC Chairman for Enugu North Senatorial District, and former Nsukka Local Government chairmen, were present at the meeting.
