The Abia State Deaf Association (ABSDA) has appealed to the state government to make the teaching of sign language mandatory in all schools across the state. The call was made on Monday in Umuahia during a series of events marking Deaf Awareness Week 2025.
During a visit to the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, the ABSDA Chairman, Mr Emenike Amakwe, explained that including sign language in school curricula would greatly aid the social and educational integration of deaf children.
Mr Amakwe noted that providing deaf students with access to sign language education would allow them to communicate more effectively, gain knowledge more rapidly, and achieve their personal and academic goals. He added that such initiatives would help reduce prejudice and enhance public understanding of deaf culture.
The association also urged the government to establish a boarding school for deaf children. According to Mr Amakwe, this institution would offer education from the primary to the secondary level and provide a nurturing environment tailored to the needs of deaf students.
“At present, many deaf children are forced to travel long distances to attend school, while others struggle to keep up in mainstream schools,” Mr Amakwe said. “A dedicated boarding school would address these challenges, ensuring they receive proper care and quality education.”
He expressed gratitude to the Commissioner, Mr Goodluck Ubochi, for facilitating the employment of deaf teachers, noting that it has helped improve the livelihoods and dignity of many in the community.
In addition, ABSDA advocated for equitable support for deaf athletes, particularly those who have won medals in national and international competitions. During a visit to the Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development, Mr Amakwe requested that the budget for deaf athletes match that of other athletes with disabilities.
Representatives of the ministries commended the association for its advocacy and assured them that the state government remains committed to inclusion. The week-long activities culminated with members of ABSDA marching through the streets of Umuahia in vibrant uniforms to sensitise the public about deaf issues.
