Nationwide Audit Of Federal Roads Underway By ICPC And Ministry Of Works

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and the Federal Ministry of Works have commenced a nationwide Special Tracking Exercise to verify and monitor federal road projects across the country. ICPC Spokesperson Akor Odey disclosed the development in Abuja on Monday.

The exercise covers 760 federal road projects with a combined contract value of over N36 trillion. According to Odey, the initiative began on 14 November and involves joint teams of ICPC investigators, engineers from the Ministry of Works, and independent professionals, including members of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS).

These teams are deployed in all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, conducting physical verification and performance audits on the ground. The exercise is designed to strengthen fiscal governance, ensure cost-effective infrastructure development, and maximise the use of public funds.

Odey highlighted that the initiative also aims to uphold procurement integrity, investigate fraudulent contract awards, and enforce contractor accountability. Projects that have been abandoned or are not meeting contractual specifications will be closely monitored to ensure completion.

A key objective of the audit is financial recovery. “Public funds will be reclaimed from projects found to be grossly inflated or where contractors have failed to perform,” Odey explained, stressing that accountability measures will follow the exercise.

The audit process includes detailed reviews of project sites, documentation, and deliverables. State-level findings will be compiled into a comprehensive national report, which will guide enforcement actions and highlight areas requiring corrective intervention.

Odey described the exercise as a proactive effort to safeguard national infrastructure investments and prevent misuse of public resources. “Tracking 760 projects demonstrates our determination to collaborate with government institutions to close financial leakages and promote transparency,” he said.

The ICPC reaffirmed its commitment to fortifying integrity in public procurement and ensuring that government infrastructure projects are executed efficiently, transparently, and in a manner that benefits Nigerian citizens.
