The Vice Chairman (West) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, Chief Sunday Olaifa, says he is confident the party will overcome its internal divisions before Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, Olaifa—who also leads the New Era Political Movement—said he believed the PDP would emerge stronger despite ongoing disputes and litigation.
He said the legal battles confronting the party were unlikely to cripple its capacity to field candidates for key positions in the forthcoming polls.
“The PDP will surmount its internal challenges before the 2027 elections,” Olaifa said. “At the end of the day, most of the cases may end up at the Supreme Court, but the PDP will remain functional. The party will present candidates for all elective offices—state assembly, governorship, House of Representatives and Senate.”
He emphasised that only the party’s constitutionally mandated processes could determine its presidential candidate, insisting no individual held the authority to impose a nominee.
Olaifa also underscored his loyalty to the party, rejecting any notion of defection.
“Whatever happens, I and my team will remain in the PDP. That is not negotiable,” he said.
The PDP has faced months of internal turmoil, which has prompted the defection of several prominent party members, including governors and lawmakers, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
