President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has urged Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, to continue upholding the bold, visionary and developmental legacies of the late former governor, Prince Abubakar Audu.
Tinubu made the call on Sunday in Lokoja during the 10th memorial anniversary of Audu. He was represented at the event by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris.
The President described sustaining Audu’s achievements as the best way to immortalise the late leader, commending the state government for its efforts so far.
“The continuity of good governance is the greatest honour you can pay to a hero who has long joined our ancestors,” Tinubu said.
“I urge you to continue on this path, and the Federal Government stands ready to partner with you to deliver more dividends of democracy to the good people of Kogi.”
He encouraged leaders to commit themselves to the future Audu envisioned—one of unity, prosperity and security where democratic dividends reach all citizens.
“Audu’s legacy is a challenge to all of us in leadership—a challenge to be bold and visionary,” he added.
Also speaking, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, described Audu as a man of courage and expertise who contributed immensely to the development of modern Kogi.
“When Kogi was created, he became the first elected governor. That shows the love his people had for him,” Akume said.
“In 2015, he was cruising to victory when we heard the sad news of his demise. By renaming the Kogi State University after him, the state government has shown leadership.”
Similarly, Rep. James Faleke, represented by Mr Samuel Idris, hailed Audu as a true progressive and architect of modern Kogi.
“The honour we can pay him is to recommit ourselves to his dreams, legacies and his desire for the progress of the state. Let us build a Kogi where no tribe is left behind,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of the Audu family, the Minister of Steel Development, Alhaji Shuaibu Abubakar, thanked President Tinubu, Governor Ododo and other dignitaries for honouring the late statesman.
He noted that Audu’s visionary projects and reforms continue to speak for him.
“The anniversary reinforces the saying that the work of a true leader never fails. He died for his people and in service to them,” he said.
“His legacies are for us to protect, preserve and advance. May his soul continue to rest in peace.”
