Benue Assembly Extends Former Speaker Hyacinth Dajoh’s Suspension By Six Months

The Benue State House of Assembly has extended the suspension of former Speaker Hyacinth Dajoh by six months, following a motion moved during Tuesday’s plenary session by Mr Terna Shimawua (APC/Kyan).

The motion, titled “Motion to Review the Suspension of Hyacinth Dajoh (Gboko West State Constituency) from Legislative Duties”, was unanimously supported, with Simon Gabo (APC/Mata) seconding.

Dajoh was initially suspended on 26 August for three months after being accused of attempting to impeach Governor Hyacinth Alia. According to Shimawua, the former speaker has neither shown remorse nor issued an apology since the disciplinary action.

Shimawua also alleged that during his suspension, Dajoh collaborated with former Majority Leader Saater Tiseer (APC/Mbagwa) and former Minority Leader Michael Audu (PDP/Adoka-Ugboju) in a plot to impeach the current Speaker, Alfred Emberga.

“The conduct of Dajoh does not reflect the expectations of a leader, particularly following the recent change in House leadership,” Shimawua said, describing it as unbecoming of a former speaker.

Speaker Emberga emphasised the importance of maintaining the legislature’s dignity, stating:

“Nobody is bigger than an institution.”

He added that upon completion of the suspension, Dajoh must submit a written request to the Office of the Speaker and demonstrate remorse by tendering a formal apology before resuming legislative duties.

The six-month extension takes effect from 25 November 2025.
