Nigerian University Staff Warn Of Strike Amid Lingering Funding And Welfare Concerns

The Kano Zone of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has cautioned that Nigeria could face another nationwide university strike if the Federal Government fails to address unresolved issues affecting public higher education.

Speaking in Kano on Monday, Dr Abdulkadir Muhammad, Zonal Coordinator of ASUU, said the union was frustrated that negotiations had stalled weeks after suspending its two-week warning strike in October. The NEC had met from 8–9 November at Taraba State University to review progress.

Muhammad criticised government officials for presenting an “illusion” of compliance, noting that while some promotion arrears and withheld third-party deductions had been partially cleared, inflation had diminished their impact on staff welfare.

He highlighted the challenges posed by the uncontrolled establishment of new universities without sustainable funding, warning that this trend was eroding educational standards and accelerating the emigration of skilled academics.

ASUU welcomed the Federal Government’s seven-year freeze on creating new federal universities and urged states to adopt a similar approach. The union appealed to all stakeholders, including traditional and religious leaders, students, and civil society groups, to help push for a prompt resolution before a potential fresh strike.
