President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigeria’s Super Eagles to remain focused and positive following their elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, expressing appreciation for their efforts despite Sunday’s defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo in Morocco.
The president’s message, delivered on Monday through his spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, encouraged the team to shift attention to the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to be held in Morocco from December next year to January 2026.
Nigeria bowed out of the World Cup playoffs after a 1-1 draw in extra time and a narrow 4-3 penalty loss to DR Congo, representing the country’s second consecutive miss at football’s biggest tournament.
Tinubu said that although the setback was deeply felt, the team showed strong resolve throughout the campaign, particularly in their earlier victory over Gabon.
“We must commend the players for their efforts and sustain our support to them,” he said, urging football administrators and stakeholders to address existing gaps and rebuild the team’s competitiveness.
He stressed that the immediate priority should now be top-level preparation for AFCON. “All efforts must be directed at the Cup of Nations. Our Super Eagles must regain their pride of place,” Tinubu said.
Nigeria came close to continental glory earlier this year before falling 2-1 to hosts Côte d’Ivoire in the AFCON final.
