INEC To Defend Consolidated Anambra South Senatorial Election Petition

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced it will soon commence its defence in the consolidated petition challenging the Anambra South senatorial by-election at the National and State Assembly By-Election Petitions Tribunal.

The by-election, held on August 16, saw Emmanuel Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) emerge as senator.

Mr Ibrahim Mahmud, Secretary of the tribunal, said five petitions were received, all contesting Nwachukwu’s election. Petitions by Donald Amamgbo (ADC, EPT/AN/SEN/01/2025) and the ADC party (EPT/AN/SEN/02/2025) have been consolidated, with hearings concluded. INEC, Nwachukwu, and APGA are respondents in both cases.

Hearing has commenced on the APC petition (EPT/AN/SEN/04/2025), while the SDP petition (EPT/AN/SEN/05/2025) is at the prehearing stage. The petition by the Allied Peoples Movement (EPT/AN/SEN/03/2025) has been withdrawn.

“All petitions have been responded to. The consolidated petitioners have closed their case; INEC’s defence is scheduled for November 20,” Mahmud said, adding that prehearing for APC and SDP petitions will also continue on the same date.
