Lagos Police Reaffirm Intention To Arrest Activist Sowore Over Alleged Violent Protest Plans

The Lagos State Police Command has reiterated its plan to arrest political activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, over alleged intentions to incite violent protests in the state.

Commissioner of Police Olohundare Jimoh made the statement on Monday during a strategic security meeting at the Command Headquarters in Ikeja, noting that Sowore had failed to honour an invitation from the police.

“He never showed up. If you are declared wanted, you are to report to the nearest police station, not call me over the phone. The order to arrest him stands,” Jimoh said, adding that any officer who sees Sowore must apprehend him and bring him to the State Criminal Investigation Department for investigation.

The CP said security operatives recently intercepted a group of about 300 people allegedly mobilising to disrupt public peace on the Third Mainland Bridge, arresting 13 of them and recovering a vehicle loaded with loudspeakers and a generator intended for the demonstration.

Jimoh dismissed criticism on social media of his decision, insisting that the police acted lawfully to protect Lagosians.

“Bridges across the world are designed for moving traffic, not stationary weight. Any threat to the Third Mainland Bridge is a threat to the economy and safety of Lagosians. As CP, I am empowered under Section 215 of the Constitution to ensure law and order,” he said.

Highlighting policing initiatives under his leadership, Jimoh noted the creation of specialised units such as the Eko Strike Force, Anti-Cultism Teams, and Anti-Car Theft Squads, as well as the expansion of tactical squads from 23 to 33 units across the state. He commended officers for maintaining security for over 20 million residents and thanked Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for their support.

Human rights activist Segun Awosanya (Segalink) praised Jimoh’s leadership, describing him as a “no-nonsense professional” committed to maintaining law and order. Awosanya emphasised that sustainable reform is achieved through dialogue and policy advocacy, warning that lawlessness would not be tolerated in Lagos, regardless of social status or influence.
