Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has called on northern states to strengthen cooperation in implementing tax reforms and digital transformation as part of efforts to boost revenue and achieve sustainable development.
Speaking during the 2025 Northern Revenue Conference in Kano, Yusuf said fiscal efficiency was crucial for good governance and long-term economic growth.
Represented by Alhaji Musa Shanono, Commissioner for Planning and Budget, the governor highlighted his administration’s focus on digital innovation to promote transparency and accountability in public finance.
He commended the Kano State Internal Revenue Service (KIRS) led by Dr Zaid Abubakar, describing it as a benchmark for other states.
“The 2025 Nigerian Tax Laws have created an opportunity for us to think beyond traditional boundaries,” Yusuf said. “We must expand our fiscal frontiers by engaging the informal sector and the digital economy.”
He added that integrity remained a cornerstone of governance: “Without integrity, our energy and intelligence are wasted.”
In his remarks, Dr Abubakar urged tax authorities to abandon outdated methods and embrace digital tools for effective tax administration.
“The reform agenda demands strategic thinking and technological competence,” he said. “Guesswork has no place in modern tax administration.”
He reaffirmed Kano’s commitment to continuous investment in digital transformation and capacity building to secure fiscal stability and sustainable growth.
