Flood Control: Benue To Move Residents Living Close To River Benue

The Benue State Government has said it will relocate residents living within 100 metres of the River Benue to prevent future flooding and enhance safety.

Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Solid Minerals, Dr Frederick Ikyaan, revealed this in a statement on Tuesday through his media aide, Mr Akaha Sule.

Ikyaan said discussions had begun with Wurukum community leaders as part of preparations for the relocation exercise, which includes establishing a new settlement layout for affected residents.

According to him, the initiative aligns with Governor Hyacinth Alia’s vision of protecting citizens and promoting sustainable urban planning.

“The measure is intended to save lives and property. We urge affected communities to cooperate fully as the process unfolds,” the commissioner said.

Reacting, Chief Simon Tov, the Kindred Head of Wurukum, said the community welcomed the plan, praising the governor’s development agenda.

Other residents — Nuhu Apake, Abdulsalam Amanke, and Dennis Adanji — expressed appreciation for the government’s proactive steps while appealing for job opportunities in upcoming projects.

They were joined by Peter Atuba and Amos Yange, who commended the governor’s efforts, describing the move as a solution to years of hardship caused by floods.
