Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Dr Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), has warned that the 2027 general elections represent Nigeria’s last peaceful opportunity to reorganize and save the country from deepening instability.
Speaking to journalists in Lagos, Agbakoba said Nigeria’s current governance structure — which he described as a “unitary-federal system” — is flawed and unsustainable. He insisted that unless power is devolved to states and regions, no meaningful reform will succeed.
“True nation-building cannot be achieved without decentralisation, equity, and a people-driven constitution. If we get 2027 wrong, the consequences will be far-reaching and unpredictable. But if we get it right, we can lay the foundation for a new Nigeria,” he stated.
Calls for a New Constitution
Agbakoba declared the 1999 Constitution “failed and irredeemable,” adding that 25 years of amendments have not addressed the core governance failures in the country.
He argued that:
Nigeria is trapped in a “fatal illusion of federalism.”
Only a people-driven constitution based on true federalism, devolution of powers, and fiscal autonomy for states can ensure national stability.
Proper restructuring could unlock over ₦500 trillion in economic potential.
“We can no longer pretend that the 1999 Constitution can deliver progress. It was designed for a command structure, not a federation,” he said.
