Nigeria Insists Students Must Sit English And Maths At O’Level Despite Admission Policy Changes

The Nigerian government has confirmed that English Language and Mathematics remain compulsory for all candidates at the O’Level, dismissing claims that the subjects are no longer required under new university admission rules.

In a statement released in Abuja, Folasade Boriowo, spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Education, said the clarification follows public confusion about the recently announced overhaul of tertiary admission requirements.

Education Minister Dr Tunji Alausa said the policy reform introduces greater flexibility, enabling universities to accept candidates into some courses even if they do not have credit passes in English or Mathematics. However, he emphasised that students must still register for and sit both subjects in their O’Level exams.

“English and Mathematics are essential for communication, reasoning, and lifelong learning,” Dr Alausa said. “This reform only affects admission criteria. It does not cancel the requirement to take these subjects.”

He noted that the policy is part of the government’s commitment to inclusiveness, fairness, and the development of human capital, allowing students with strengths in other areas to access higher education.

The minister advised students, parents, and schools to depend on official sources for accurate information and avoid misinformation.
