ASUU Begin Two-Week Strike Over Unmet Demands

Academic staff at Nigeria’s Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH) in Ondo State have joined a nationwide two-week strike called by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) over unresolved labour grievances with the federal government.

Dr Oluwatoyin Ogunbamike, Chairman of the ASUU branch at OAUSTECH, confirmed on Monday that lecturers had downed tools in compliance with the directive from the union’s national body.

The strike, which began at midnight on 13 October, was declared by ASUU’s National President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, during a news conference at the University of Abuja.

Piwuna said the decision followed the government’s continued failure to address key issues, including funding for public universities, unpaid allowances, and implementation of previous agreements.

Ogunbamike said the action was necessary “for the betterment of all ASUU members nationwide,” adding that the branch was fully in support of the national decision.

The industrial action will have minimal impact on OAUSTECH students, who are currently on break ahead of the 2025/2026 academic session.
