Tinubu’s Health Renewal Initiative Guiding NHIA’s Service Reform — Ohiri

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) says its reforms are being guided by President Bola Tinubu’s Health Sector Renewal Investment Initiative (HSRII), which seeks to modernise Nigeria’s healthcare system.

Speaking in Abuja at the signing of a cooperation agreement with SERVICOM, NHIA Director-General Dr Kelechi Ohiri said the initiative focuses on four priority areas: service delivery, health outcomes, the healthcare value chain, and health security.

He stressed that the NHIA’s mission was to guarantee access to affordable healthcare without financial hardship. “It is not about the size of our hospitals or the amount spent. It is about how citizens are treated and the quality of care they receive,” he said.

Ohiri explained that the NHIA is restructuring to improve accountability and responsiveness, while the partnership with SERVICOM will ensure better complaint handling and service standards across hospitals.

The move coincides with Customer Service Week, which Ohiri described as symbolic of the renewed focus on citizen-centred healthcare.

SERVICOM coordinator Anthony Oshin praised the NHIA for prioritising service excellence, saying the partnership showed that government agencies could work together to improve transparency, accountability, and public trust.

Launched in December 2023, the HSRII aims to expand insurance coverage, strengthen efficiency and ensure equitable access to quality care across Nigeria.
