Northern Minorities Group Slams El-Rufai Over Tinubu Tenure Allegation

The Northern Nigeria Minorities Group (NNMG) has condemned former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, over his alleged claim that President Bola Tinubu is plotting to extend his tenure beyond the constitutionally allowed eight years.

In a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, the Convener of the group, Chief Jacob Edi, described El-Rufai’s remarks as “reckless, malicious, and a direct affront to democracy.”

The group accused the ex-governor of political opportunism, saying his comments were motivated by bitterness over being excluded from Tinubu’s ministerial cabinet. “If El-Rufai had been appointed into the president’s team, would he still be making these wild allegations? Everyone knows the answer,” the statement noted.

NNMG alleged that El-Rufai had a record of sowing discord for personal gain, warning that his latest outburst was “dangerous, destabilising, and a threat to national unity.”

It stressed that the 1999 Constitution was clear on the two-term limit for presidents, dismissing El-Rufai’s claims as fear-mongering.

The group demanded that El-Rufai retract his comments and apologise, while urging Nigerians to ignore his statements. It also called on security agencies to place him under watch, warning that his words could incite political tension.

“The minorities of Northern Nigeria will resist any attempt—whether by tenure elongation or by bitter politicians sowing confusion—to derail our democracy,” the statement added.
